Since 2005 the Loro Parque Fundación has partnered the Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education (SPVS – Sociedade de Pesquisa em Vida Selvagem e Educação Ambiental) to recover the wild population of the Red-tailed Amazon (Amazona brasiliensis), a threatened species endemic to the coastal Atlantic rainforest in south-east Brazil. At the end of the 1990s, BirdLife International estimated its entire population at between 2,500 and 3,500 individuals. Our project has used nest-monitoring, nest protection and artificial nests to increase the recruitment of young birds to the population. Each year the project makes a complete census of the population, and the most recent census counted a record 7.452 individuals. Please celebrate this achievement by watching the following video.
